Banaras Hindu University [B.H.U] Banaras Hindu University or Kashi Hindu Vishvidyalaya.is known for a Capital of Knowledge across India and the World. Feb 4 1916 Foundation stone of BHU laid by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. He created history in Indian education with this institution. He chose Banaras as the site, because of the centuries old tradition of learning, wisdom and spirituality inherent to the place. His vision was to blend the best of Indian education called from the ancient centres of learning - Takshashila and Nalanda and other hallowed institutions, with the best tradition of modern universities of the west. Great minds and personalities like Annie Besant, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Shyama Charan De and many others joined hand with him in his quest for knowledge, arousing the national spirit in India and winning freedom with the power of education and righteousness. Malaviya passed away in 1946. But his spirit still lives and there are many who bear the torch that he lit, Many more stand ready to shoulder the mantle of his responsibility. Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith Varanasi Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith is Known for Knowledge & culture. Founding resolution of Babu Shiva Prasad Gupt [ RASHTRA RATNA ] inspiration of the Mahatma Gandhi [ FATHER OF THE NATION ] and brilliance of Dr.Bhagwan Das [ BHARAT RATNA ] were jointly responsible for the birth of this national educational institution. It was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi during the Non-Cooperation movement of the freedom struggle; on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami on Feb 10 1921. This epoch making event started a new chapter in the history of the institution. Babu Sampurnanand was appointed as the Chancellor and Acharya Birbal Singh as Vice-chancellor. As the chief minister of U.P, Pt. Kamlapati Tripathi initiated a state government resolution to make his alma mater a Statutory University. On 15th January 1974,his ambition fructified. At this point of time, Prof. Raghukul Tilak was the Vice-chancellor & the Governor of U.P became the Chancellor in accordance with the U.P.University Act.
